Chapter 11: Audiovisual Technologies

Audio Technologies

An example of a traditional audio technology would be the talking book. The talking book can be used to help children learn to read by following along when the story is spoken to them. It can also be used for high school students whom want to hear the story another way or told more dramatically.

An emerging audio technology example is internet radio. Internet radio can be used in the classroom for pleasure or it can be used to listen to the news. Listening to the news in class can really help children gain a firmer grasp of what is going on in the world.

Visual Technologies

An example of a traditional visual technology would be an overhead projector. Overhead projectors can be utilized in classrooms to show students how to solve math problems or even for copying down notes. Students can also use them to do presentations.

An emerging visual technology is a document camera. Document camera's project papers exactly as they are onto a screen. Document camera's are similar to overhead projectors but they can be used to help revise papers or show students examples of papers. You can also show/explain how to solve math problems with them.
